Layout

When designing layouts, dividing the space into fractions, verical or horizontal, helps create a structured and harmonious composition. This technique ensures that both images and color backgrounds are balanced, leading to a clean, cohesive design.

How to:
1. Divide the workspace into 24 equal sections along the longer edge (or 16 for square layouts).
2. Establish the baselines.
3. Set the fractions based on one of the lines, using rules of 1/1, 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4.

1/1 (full-width): Use the entire width of the layout for images or solid color backgrounds.
1/2 (half-width): Splitting the layout into two equal halves provides balance. One half can feature an image, while the other can be filled with a solid background color and text.
1/3 (one-third width): This division often works well for banners or hero images.
1/4 (quarter width): A 1/4 division creates a more dynamic, asymmetrical layout. It allows you to feature a smaller image or simple text on a color background.

These layout rules will help ensure that all UPM's brand materials – whether in print or digital – have a consistent appearance, and remains cohesive and easy to recognize across all platforms.

Keep layouts clean, simple and organized with consistent spacing and alignment. Use imagery thoughtfully, with minimal distractions. Don’t overcrowd designs with too many elements or text, always leave enough breathing space to avoid clutter and maintain visual hierarchy. Ensure the spacing between text, buttons, and images. Use solid color backgrounds, according to the color hierarchy and follow the rules of color pairing for typography. Clear, legible typography is a key to effective communication and design.
